BNPL late payments hit a record high in 2026. A LendingTree tracker updated October 14, 2026 found that 47 percent of buy now, pay later users paid late at least once in the past year. That rate has climbed steadily. It was 34 percent in 2024 and 41 percent in 2025.
Most late payments are brief. 72 percent of users who paid late say their most recent slip was about a week or less overdue. But the yearly rate climbing three years in a row signals a pattern.
BNPL loans now appear on credit reports more broadly, starting earlier in 2026. A missed payment can now damage your credit the way a missed credit card payment does. Late fees also stack up fast when you juggle multiple loans.
The tracker points to two main drivers. First, users are carrying more loans at once. 25 percent of BNPL users now have three or more active loans at the same time, making due dates harder to track. Second, BNPL use has spread into everyday spending. 29 percent of users now put groceries on a BNPL plan, up from 14 percent two years earlier.
A deeper issue underlies the climbs. 54 percent of BNPL users say they could not make ends meet without these loans. For that group, a missed payment reflects an already stretched budget. Additionally, 68 percent of BNPL users agree the loans cause them to overspend. Among Gen Z users, that figure reaches 83 percent.
To avoid late payments, write down each due date the moment you approve a loan and track it on the same calendar where you monitor rent and other fixed costs. Limit yourself to one active BNPL loan at a time. Before choosing a provider, compare how different apps handle fees, reporting, and repayment windows.
