American Express is reshaping benefits on its Platinum Card, adding Airbnb perks while tightening restrictions on one of its marquee benefits. Starting in 2027, the $600 annual hotel credit will require cardholders to book stays of at least two nights at Fine Hotels and Resorts properties. Previously, the credit applied to any eligible hotel stay with no minimum length requirement.
The change directly affects Platinum cardholders who currently use the credit for single-night stays or shorter trips. The two-night minimum reduces flexibility and may force users to either take longer trips or lose the benefit's full value. AmEx has not announced a phase-out date for the old policy, so cardholders should plan for the transition in early 2027.
On the positive side, AmEx is expanding earning potential for Platinum members. The card now offers 5X points per dollar spent on Airbnb bookings made through December 31, 2027. Cardholders also receive a complimentary Airbnb credit (the specific amount has not been disclosed in all regions). This move taps into growing demand for alternative accommodations, where Airbnb bookings often compete directly with traditional hotels.
The Platinum Card carries a $695 annual fee in the United States. The $600 hotel credit has long served as a partial offset to that fee, making the card's net cost roughly $95 per year before considering other benefits. The two-night minimum could reduce that credit's effective value for frequent business travelers, short-trip planners, or anyone who typically books one-night stays.
AmEx justifies the change by positioning it around premium properties. Fine Hotels and Resorts includes luxury chains and independent boutique hotels in major markets worldwide. The membership at the two-night level means fewer but higher-value bookings, which may align better with the Platinum Card's premium positioning.
Other Platinum benefits remain unchanged. Cardholders retain the $200 airline fee credit, $15 monthly Uber Cash, $10 monthly Peacock streaming credit, and access to concierge services. The 5X points on flights and prepaid hotels also continue. These benefits collectively total over $1,000 in value for heavy users.
The Airbnb expansion signals AmEx's recognition that card members want lodging flexibility beyond traditional hotels. As remote work and experiential travel grow, Airbnb represents a meaningful alternative to hotel stays. The 5X earning rate on Airbnb aligns with earning rates on flights and hotels, making it equally rewarded within the Platinum Card's structure.
Cardholders should review their travel patterns before 2027. Those who routinely book single-night hotel stays may see their hotel credit's value diminish. However, frequent Airbnb users gain an advantage through the new 5X rate and potential credit. AmEx likely expects the Airbnb perks and Fine Hotels positioning to retain Platinum members despite the hotel credit restriction.
Current Platinum cardholders with annual fees due in 2026 or later will see these changes applied to their accounts. Those renewing before the 2027 implementation date will operate under existing rules through their current membership year.
