Bilt, the rental-focused rewards program backed by the apartment rental platform, has expanded its transfer partner network to include Amtrak. Members can now convert Bilt Points to Amtrak Guest Rewards at a 2:1 ratio, meaning two Bilt Points convert to one Amtrak point.

This move positions Bilt as the only major credit card rewards program offering direct transfers to Amtrak, a significant competitive advantage for travelers who use rail services. The 2:1 conversion rate is reasonable for train travel redemptions. An Amtrak point is worth roughly 1 to 1.5 cents when redeemed for tickets, placing the effective value of Bilt Points used this way at 0.5 to 0.75 cents per point. That's middle-of-the-road value compared to transferring Bilt Points to other travel partners.

Bilt Points earned through the Bilt Mastercard credit card, or through apartment rental payments on the Bilt platform itself, can now reach Amtrak redemptions without routing through third-party sites. The direct partnership streamlines the process and eliminates middlemen fees or conversion losses.

For regular Amtrak riders, this opens a practical path to free or discounted tickets. Someone spending $2,000 on rent through the Bilt platform earns 2,000 points (1 point per dollar). Converting those 2,000 points to Amtrak at 2:1 yields 1,000 Amtrak points. A Northeast Regional ticket from New York to Boston costs roughly 10,000 to 12,000 Amtrak points depending on travel dates, so accumulating points across multiple months of rent payments makes sense for frequent riders.

The addition reflects Bilt's strategy to build a rewards ecosystem around renters, a historically underserved customer segment. Traditional credit card programs prioritize airline and hotel transfers. Bilt targets people who may not travel by plane frequently but do use trains, ride-share services, or book hotels through alternative channels.

Bilt's transfer partners now include over a dozen programs across travel categories. The Amtrak addition fills a gap between airline and hotel options, appealing to budget-conscious travelers and Northeast corridor commuters. Amtrak ridership has grown in recent years, particularly along high-traffic routes like the Northeast Regional and Northeast Direct services.

The 2:1 ratio suggests Bilt and Amtrak negotiated terms that balance member value with program sustainability. Stricter ratios (like 3:1 or 4:1) would dilute the benefit for members. The current terms keep transfers worthwhile for active users while maintaining profit margins for both companies.

For renters deciding whether to apply for the Bilt Mastercard, the Amtrak partnership adds another redemption option beyond airlines and hotels. The card earns 3 points per dollar on rent, 1 point per dollar on other purchases, with no annual fee. Paired with Amtrak transfers, consistent rent-payers can build meaningful point balances without spending beyond their normal housing costs.
