# Chase 5% Bonus Categories for Q4 2026 Focus on Holiday Spending
Chase Bank has announced its rotating bonus categories for the final quarter of 2026, offering cardholders 5% cash back on grocery stores, dining, and American Red Cross donations. The announcement arrives as consumers enter peak holiday shopping season.
The three bonus categories reflect typical Q4 spending patterns. Grocery stores capture holiday meal prep and entertaining expenses. Dining covers restaurant visits and takeout orders during holiday gatherings. The American Red Cross category targets charitable giving, particularly common during year-end tax-planning season.
This bonus structure applies to Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Flex cardholders, two of Chase's most popular cash-back credit cards. The 5% rate applies to the first $1,500 in combined purchases across all bonus categories each quarter, then 1% cash back on additional purchases. Both cards charge no annual fee.
Chase rotates its bonus categories quarterly. Earlier in 2026, cardholders earned 5% back on categories like gas stations, streaming services, or home improvement stores, depending on the quarter. This rotating structure encourages cardholders to use their Chase Freedom card for different purchase types throughout the year.
The grocery store bonus holds particular value for Q4. Holiday meal planning typically requires larger grocery purchases than normal months. Families buying ingredients for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year's celebrations can accumulate significant cash back. A household spending $400 on groceries during Q4 would earn $20 in cash back under this bonus structure.
The dining bonus applies to restaurants, bars, and eligible food delivery services. During December, holiday parties, family dinners, and year-end entertaining drive dining spending upward. The 5% rate rewards this seasonal behavior.
The American Red Cross category introduces a charitable component. Donors giving year-end gifts to the Red Cross earn cash back on their contribution, though this represents a small portion of holiday spending for most households.
Chase Freedom Flex users also earn an additional 1% cash back on all purchases, plus introductory bonuses on new accounts. Chase Freedom standard users earn flat 1% on all purchases not in bonus categories. Both cards pair well with the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve for travel rewards redemption through Chase's Ultimate Rewards program.
Consumers planning major Q4 purchases should activate their bonus categories through the Chase app or website before making purchases. Failure to activate can result in missing the bonus rate entirely, reverting to the base 1% rate.
The grocery store bonus ranks as the most valuable for most households. Average American grocery spending runs $280 to $400 monthly, meaning holiday-season grocery purchases could easily hit the $1,500 quarterly cap. Smart shoppers might concentrate grocery buying in Q4 to maximize the 5% rate before bonus categories rotate in January 2027.
Card benefits reset quarterly, so any unused portion of the $1,500 cap expires at year end. Chase does not carry over unused caps to the following quarter, so cardholders should monitor their spending against category limits throughout October, November, and December.
