Delta Air Lines has expanded SkyMiles earning beyond flights. The airline partnered with Airbnb Experiences to let customers rack up miles when booking tours and activities through the platform.
The mechanics work like this. When you book an Airbnb Experience and link your Delta SkyMiles account, you earn miles on the activity purchase. The exact earning rate depends on your Delta status and the experience cost. Standard members typically earn 1 mile per dollar spent on qualifying experiences.
This partnership breaks the traditional airline miles earning model. Most people think earning miles requires buying plane tickets. Delta's move opens miles accumulation to travel experiences that don't involve flying at all. Rome walking tours, cooking classes, wine tastings, and guided adventures all qualify.
The advantage for leisure travelers is real. If you're already planning to book an Airbnb Experience during a trip, you might as well earn miles on it. The miles stack toward free flights, seat upgrades, or other airline rewards. For someone taking a European vacation, two experiences in Rome could generate 500 to 1,000 miles depending on activity pricing.
The catch. Not every Airbnb Experience counts. You must book through the Airbnb Experiences section specifically and have your SkyMiles account linked beforehand. You won't earn miles on regular Airbnb accommodations, only experiences.
This works best if you're a frequent Delta flyer building toward a redemption. If you fly Delta regularly and already use Airbnb for travel, the integration adds value at no cost. The miles come in addition to any credit card rewards or status benefits you already earn.
The broader picture shows airlines testing new revenue streams and partnerships. As flight demand stabilizes, carriers are mining partnerships to keep customers engaged with their loyalty programs. Airbnb gets transaction volume. Delta gets stickier customers.
