Opera has released a new security feature called "Paste Protect" designed to stop ClickFix attacks, a growing threat where criminals trick users into pasting malicious code into browser consoles.

ClickFix scams work by directing victims to fake tech support websites that prompt them to open their browser's developer console and paste code they're given. Once pasted, the code grants attackers access to accounts, banking information, or other sensitive data. The scams often target people searching for help with legitimate problems, redirecting them to fraudulent pages that look professional.

Paste Protect blocks this attack vector by preventing code from being pasted directly into the browser console. Instead of allowing the paste to execute silently, Opera now requires users to manually type or confirm the action before any code runs. This friction creates a moment for users to question whether they should actually be pasting unknown code.

The feature activates automatically in Opera's latest version. Users don't need to enable it or adjust settings. Opera joins a small group of browsers taking action against ClickFix. Chrome added similar protections in 2023 after security researchers documented the attacks in detail.

ClickFix attacks have spread rapidly because they exploit human behavior rather than software vulnerabilities. Scammers use ads, SEO manipulation, and social engineering to reach desperate users, then convince them they need to run code to fix their computer or access their accounts. The attacks work across multiple browsers and platforms.

For Opera users, Paste Protect delivers genuine protection. The feature reduces the risk substantially without requiring users to understand the technical details of why pasting unknown code is dangerous. Non-Opera users should remain vigilant. Firefox and Safari have not announced similar protections, leaving their users more exposed. If you use Chrome, Firefox, or Safari and receive instructions to paste code into your console, treat it as a red flag. Legitimate tech support never
