# June Tax Deadlines and IRS Refund Status

Summer brings more than warm weather. The IRS has set several critical deadlines in June that affect both individual taxpayers and business owners.

Estimated quarterly tax payments for self-employed workers and business owners are due June 17, 2024. Freelancers, contractors, and small business owners who expect to owe $1,000 or more in taxes must submit Form 1040-ES by this date. Missing this deadline triggers penalties and interest charges, even if you file your full return on time later.

Corporate and partnership tax returns are also due this month. C-corporations must file Form 1120 by June 17 if operating on a calendar year basis. Pass-through entities like S-corporations and partnerships follow the same June 17 deadline for Forms 1120-S and 1065.

For those waiting on refunds, June is a good time to check your status through IRS.gov. Use the "Where's My Refund?" tool to track returns filed in April and May. The IRS processes most refunds within 21 days, though complex returns or those with errors take longer. Paper-filed returns can take up to six weeks.

Retirement account contributions for tax year 2024 have a different deadline. Traditional and Roth IRA contributions must be made by April 15, 2025, not June 17.

Taxpayers who missed the April 15 filing deadline can still file without penalty if they pay any owed taxes by June 17. The IRS assesses failure-to-pay penalties on unpaid balances, not on late filings alone, as long as you file within the grace period.

If you're self-employed and struggling to cover estimated taxes, consider setting aside 25 to 30 percent of quarterly profits automatically
