This trend is being sold as inevitable. It deserves more skepticism than it is getting.
The conventional wisdom says we're entering an era of streaming discipline. Households are supposedly wising up, cutting the fat, rotating subscriptions seasonally, and treating each service as a deliberate choice rather than a forgotten auto-renewal. The narrative is comforting: chaos will give way to order. Consumers will optimize. Everything will be rational.
I'm not convinced.
The streaming industry's recent pricing moves and crackdowns on account sharing suggest something different is happening. Platforms aren't celebrating a new age of consumer restraint. They're reacting to stalled growth by making individual services harder to share and more expensive to avoid. If the market were trending toward genuine rationalization, we wouldn't see so much friction being introduced into the system.
The "rationalization" story assumes human behavior is more systematic than it typically is. It assumes people carefully audit their subscriptions monthly, calculate cost-per-view, and make spreadsheet-driven decisions. Some people do this. Many don't. A person might keep a streaming service they barely use because canceling requires remembering a password, enduring a retention call, or accepting the mild guilt of quitting. These aren't economic decisions. They're friction points.
Behavioral economics has spent decades documenting how defaults shape choices. The default here remains: services stay until something forces change. That something is usually not careful budgeting. It's a disputed charge, an unexpectedly high bill, or a service shutdown.
Consider the parallel to other recurring services. Health Savings Account receipts pile up in drawers and email folders because tracking them is tedious, not because people rationally choose to avoid tracking. Fraud alert texts get clicked because most people don't pause to verify their source. These aren't failures of intelligence. They're failures of system design to match human psychology.
Streaming platforms understand this. Their recent strategies reveal they don't actually believe in the rationalization thesis either. If they did, they'd be optimizing for transparency and ease of cancellation. Instead, we see paid ad tiers, password-sharing crackdowns, and tiered pricing designed to nudge reluctant users toward more expensive options. These are moves of companies betting that inertia, not reason, governs behavior.
The streaming wars didn't pause because households got smarter. They paused because saturation hit a ceiling. The industry responded not by making services cheaper or easier to manage, but by making them stickier and more expensive. That's the opposite of rationalization. That's an arms race against it.
This matters because the rationalization narrative shapes how we think about our own choices. If you believe the market is trending toward sensible, curated subscriptions, you might assume you should be doing the same. You might feel vaguely irresponsible for having six active services. But that guilt ignores how these services are engineered to persist, and how difficult genuine rationalization actually is at scale.
The more honest framing: we're not moving toward a rationalized streaming future. We're moving toward a more fragmented one where people maintain overlapping subscriptions they partly use, while platforms invest heavily in making cancellation harder and subscription creep more automatic. The rationalization impulse exists, but so does the friction designed to defeat it.
If you're genuinely trying to optimize your subscriptions, don't rely on willpower or monthly review habits. You'll need structural solutions: hardcoded cancellation reminders, payment cards dedicated to subscriptions, or ruthless quarterly audits. The platforms aren't going to make this easier for you.
That's not because optimization is inevitable. It's because it's contrary to their interests.
