Apple has finally enabled full RCS encryption on iPhones running iOS 26.5, closing a security gap that left messages between iPhone and Android users vulnerable to interception.

RCS, or Rich Communication Services, replaces the aging SMS standard with features like read receipts, typing indicators, and higher-quality media sharing. Apple began supporting RCS last year but initially sent messages without end-to-end encryption when communicating with Android devices. This left conversations exposed compared to Apple's encrypted iMessage service, which locks down all communications between iPhones.

The update matters for iPhone owners who regularly text Android users. Previously, those messages traveled unencrypted across carrier networks, theoretically accessible to hackers or surveillance. Android phones have supported encrypted RCS since Google pushed the feature through its Messages app in 2024. Apple's delay created an awkward middle ground where iMessage stayed secure but cross-platform texting remained exposed.

iOS 26.5 activates end-to-end encryption for RCS messages, matching the security level Android users already had. This only works when both devices use RCS with encryption enabled. If one person still uses older SMS, messages fall back to unencrypted SMS by default.

For most iPhone users, this change happens automatically. You do not need to toggle any settings or download a separate app. Messages sent through the standard iPhone texting app now encrypt RCS conversations without extra steps.

The rollout addresses years of criticism about Apple's messaging practices. While iMessage remains exclusive to Apple devices, encrypted RCS brings parity for mixed-platform conversations. Texts between iPhones and Android phones now offer the same encryption protection that iMessage provides to iPhone-only conversations.

Users should verify their iOS version in Settings under General > About. Anyone running iOS 26.5 or later gets the protection automatically. The change applies to all conversations with RCS-compatible
